The Chapter 4 Adaptation

Sigurd and company are now in Sailane Castle. More babies have been born by this point. We see Sigurd looking out the window with a mournful look on his face. The events of the previous season have left their mark on him. All he has left is his son Seliph and his army. Sigurd wonders where Diadora is and if she’s even alive. He tells Seliph that he misses her and how lonely he feels with her being absent.

We see Ayra and Lex feeding their children while Aideen and Mideel are busy feeding theirs.

Azel and Tiltyu are off in a different section of the castle having a similar conversation to the one that they had in the game. Tiltyu tells Azel that she feels like the rest of the army holds her in suspicion due to her heritage plus the fact that she’s only recently joined. Azel says that nobody’s thinking that and that Lex hasn’t been viewed with suspicion despite being Langobalt’s son. Besides, he says, he’d always be there for her. Tiltyu smiles at Azel, puts her head on his shoulder and talks about a time when they used to be together. We then get a conversation about Azel and Tiltyu’s shared past together.

We get more conversations between Claude and Sylvia and Briggid and Dew. We then cut to Finn and Lachesis. Lachesis points out that Finn’s been withdrawn from her. Finn points out that he thought that she liked him but now she had a kid with Beowulf so he’d rather not get in the way. He also tells Lachesis that now that they’ve been branded as enemies to Grandbell the battles in the future are about to become more intense. He says that Cuan is extremely anxious about this and that he’s been talking about going back to Lenster to lead an army that will reinforce Sigurd’s. Lachesis tells Finn not to go and that she doesn’t want him to leave. She even holds his hand, her grip very strong. Finn feels a twinge of sadness but then tells her that he doesn’t exactly know how to feel. He still really, really likes her, but also feels like she betrayed him when she chose to have that one night stand with Beowulf. She has a son now, she should go raise him.

Cuan walks in and tells Finn that they’re all packed up and ready to go. Lachesis begs Finn not to leave and even starts crying. Finn lets go of her and tells Cuan that he’s coming. Cuan, Ethlin and Finn approach Sigurd. Cuan tells Sigurd that they’re leaving and that he intends to round up some reinforcements for him. Cuan says that the battles yet to come will be more intense and that Sigurd will need more reinforcements if they are to win. Sigurd wonders if Ethlin should be leaving with them seeing as how she’s pregnant (with Leif, but the characters don’t know that). Ethlin says that she’ll be alright. Finn tells Sigurd to stay strong and persevere and that he’ll eventually be cleared of his name. After a tearful embrace they say good-bye and leave Sigurd.

Mahnya and Fury are having a sparring session with each other. It ends with Mahnya beating Fury. “Some things never change” she says in triumph. After their sparring session they start talking to each other about what’s happened since the last time they were together. Fury summarizes everything that happened in the previous season and Mahnya talks about the growing discontent happening in Silesia. Fury mentions that she wished that Levin would take some responsibility and take his rightful place on the throne. Mahnya asks that if Levin were to be king would she like to be his queen. Fury blushes and says that it’d nice but he wouldn’t go for it. Mahnya disagrees. She says that she can still tell that Levin likes her, he’s just not good at showing his emotions.

We cut to Aideen, Briggid and Dew. Aideen hands Briggid the Ichival bow. The fact that Briggid can use it (in addition to the brow on her forehead) is proof that she is Ulir’s direct descendant and is who Aideen claims she is. Dew makes a joke about Briggid’s fancy bow being of no use if someone can attack her at close range. He makes a playful swing at her with a wooden sword. Briggid dodges and then picks up a wooden sword herself and we get a play fight. It doesn’t last very long because Briggid easily beats Dew. Both Dew and Aideen are surprised to see that Briggid is actually pretty darn good with a sword. Briggid mentions how she learned how to use both a bow and a sword back when she was being raised by pirates. (This is a nod-nod wink wink scene to Thracia 776 fans as it’s designed to foreshadow Briggid becoming Eyvale)

We then get Rahna and Sigurd having the conversation that they had in the game. Rahna mentions to Sigurd that she’s been writing letters to King Azmur explaining Sigurd’s innocence and pleading to have the charges against Sigurd removed. She says that nothing has come from it but she’s determined to keep trying. Sigurd isn’t holding his breath since he knows that somebody (probably Reptor and Langobalt) are hiding the letters.

The conversation is interrupted by an announcement that Duke Daccar and Maios have arrived and want to speak to Queen Rahna. The two of them are unhappy with the way that Rahna has handled current events. For starters they’re not happy about her decision to house the “Grandbell traitors”. They argue that by giving them asylum Rahna’s actions could be seen as defiant to Grandbell and could lead to a disastrous war with them. Daccar and Maios are of the opinion that Silesia should turn the “traitors” over to Grandbell and collect the reward on their heads.

They’re also not happy about Levin’s return. They claim that Levin is too irresponsible to be sitting on the throne and that he lacks experience in political matters. Rahna retorts that Levin would make a far better ruler than Daccar’s greedy and corrupt behind. She then says that Levin will not sit on the throne yet, but will be mentored by her. Once she feels like he could be a capable ruler she will hand the throne over to him. Daccar is infuriated by this insult and also questions Rahna’s leadership, claiming that she’s gone “soft” and is no longer fit to rule. If she will not hand the throne over to him then there will be war. Daccar and Maios leave a very fearful Rahna behind.

That night Sigurd retires to his quarters when he sees a silhouette in the distance. He asks if someone’s there and if it’s Rahna. The figure disappears and Sigurd assumes that it’s just his imagination. Then the figure appears before him with a lance in tow and stabs his leg. Sigurd cries out and fights the assailant. Mahnya hears Sigurd and charges into his room. She fights off the assailant and together the two of them drive her back. Mahnya recognizes the assassin as Deet’var, who is one of the Four Angelic Knights of Silesia. Mahnya and Deet’var have a fight in which Mahnya gets the upper hand and forces Deet’var to retreat. Deet’var hops on her Pegasus Knight and takes off. Mahnya says that she was obviously sent by Duke Daccar and Maios and that war is upon them.

*** Note to the reader: In case you’re wondering why I’m adding in an attempted assassination scene there’s a couple of reasons why. First, it’s designed to give Mahnya more screen time. Mahnya’s death doesn’t leave that much of an impact in the game because we barely to get to see her do anything. She has a connection to Fury and Levin so there’s room for development. By giving her more screen time, and more interactions with the cast, it should hopefully make her death have more of an impact when it comes.
I also wanted to give Deet’var some more screen time. She’s a minor boss in the game and for some strange reason Thracia 776 gives her a kid. Why? I have no idea but hopefully there is room to expand her character. Plus this liberty makes Daccar and Maios look all the more treacherous and helps to build up the civil war. Now back to the story. ***

The following day Mahnya and Sigurd tell Rahna about the assassination attempt. Rahna tells Mahnya to prepare the citizens for war and decides to return to Castle Silesia in order to oversee preparations. Sigurd pledges himself and his army to helping her and Mahnya.

Now we transition back to Byron. He’s now made it to the Grandbell - Issach border. Lord Ring and a couple bodyguards meet him in a secluded spot. Lord Ring (the father of Aideen, Briggid and Andre) informs Byron of recent events in the Grandbell court. They’ve found a direct descendant of Naga. Ring tells Byron that this is great since King Azmur has fallen ill and is not looking too good. The young lady has taken kindly to Alvis and it seems like there are plans for the two of them to get married. Lord Ring also informs Byron that Sigurd and company have fled to Silesia. Byron gives Ring a grim look, but tells him that he wants an audience with King Azmur. Byron says that his best chance of clearing their names is through the King. He has to have an audience with the king in secret before said king dies. Ring says that Byron’s chances are next to nothing since everybody’s out looking for them. What’s worse is that Chalphy’s Army, the Gruenen Ritter, have all been destroyed by Reptor and Langobalt’s armies. Byron’s both sad and pissed off at this point since everything’s gone to crap at this point.  Byron and Ring are discussing their next moves when an arrow finds its way through Ring’s chest and he falls to the ground dead. Byron sees Andre, Ring’s youngest son, standing triumphantly on an overhanging rock.

Andre mentions that his father was recently branded a traitor and that in order for House Jungby to clear its name they had to destroy the duke. Byron asks Andre how he could do this and Andre says that soon he will rule the dukedom of Jungby while things start to change for Grandbell. Andre mentions that he was assigned the task of hunting Byron down while Langobalt and Reptor left to apprehend Sigurd. Andre shoots an arrow at Byron but misses. Byron flees the scene as Duke Ring’s bodyguards get shot down.

Then we cut to Barhara where Alvis and Diadora are going on a walk. We see them chatting and Alvis brings up how much Diadora reminds him of his mother, Cigyun. Diadora mentions that she has no memory of her mother. Alvis mentions that he’s noticed that Diadora seems to be pretty good with light magic. A little bit of Diadora’s memories return and she mentions that she picked it up back when she was living in Verdane. Alvis asks what Diadora was doing in Verdane and she tells him that she doesn’t know. Alvis remembers hearing from one of Azel’s letters to him that Sigurd found someone from Verdane too. Perhaps there’s a light mage colony in Verdane he thinks. Or…… We see the thought enter Alvis’s mind but then he puts it away and continues his walk with Diadora. Unfortunately the doubt remains.

We go back to Sigurd and co who are making preparations for war. We see Levin and Mahnya have a conversation. They both wish that they could go back to a simpler time when things were peaceful and made sense. Levin also mentions that he had a crush on her back when they were little. Mahnya says that she knew and that she always thought of Levin more like a little brother than an actual lover. She then tells him that Fury on the other hand is more interested in him and has been for a while. Levin blushes and tries to change the subject. We get some more conversations between Claude x Sylvia, Azel x Tiltyu & Dew x Briggid.

Last, but not least, we see Daccar hiring Lamia and Donovan. He tells Maios and Deet’var that they will engage Sigurd’s forces from the north while Daccar takes control of Silesia Castle. Once he takes over Silesia he can use Rahna as his hostage and any attempts at resistance will be crushed. Even if Sigurd and co survive they can’t do much since they need Rahna’s protection in order to remain safe from Grandbell. Maios and Deet’var depart while Daccar tells one of his Pegasus Knights to find Andre and deliver a letter to him.

Before Deet’var flies off to battle we see her with her daughter Misha. Deet’var says she’s about to leave now. Misha tries to make Deet’var promise her that she’ll come back, unlike daddy. Deet’var promises her daughter that she’ll come back. She says that she’s heading off to fight to make Silesia a safer place. She also has one of her soldiers send Misha somewhere secret “where mommy will find her when everything’s over”. Maios orders Deet’var to commence the attack. Meanwhile one of Mahnya’s troops returns with the news that Duke Maios’s men have started the attack. The episode ends with Mahnya and Sigurd ordering their troops to attack.

_____________________________________________________________________

And the clash begins! Sigurd’s troops engage with the wind mages of Silesia and it’s a tough battle. Mahnya’s there fighting alongside them. Fury and Deet’var engage in battle. They get to have a conversation similar to the one they had in the game. They both land some good hits in but Deet’var gets the upper hand. Mahnya swoops in and saves her sister finishing Deet’var off. Eventually Sigurd and co make their way toward the castle where Levin faces off against his uncle Maios. The two fight but Levin clearly outclasses his uncle and kills him off.

*** Note to the reader: I’m having Mahnya fight alongside SIgurd’s army here so she can have more screentime. Her fight with Deet’var should help establish her martial prowess and help the viewer get more connected to the character. Now back to the story. ***

While Sigurd’s army took Thove, Daccar’s forces headed for Silesia Castle. Seeing how large and overwhelming the size of Daccar’s army is Rahna has the children and any citizen who can’t fight leave. She even gives the Holsety tome with a Pegasus Knight who’s supposed to be accompanying them. The soldier hesitates, asking “What if this falls into enemy hands?” Rahna points out that only Levin can use it so even if it falls into Daccar’s hands he won’t be able to use it against them. She also says that it’s not safe in Silesia Castle since it’s about to be attacked and it could be overtaken by enemy forces. With that the Pegasus Knight flies off to find Levin while Rahna tries to hold out until Sigurd and Mahnya come back.

Silesia Castle is immediately put under siege as Daccar’s forces surround it on all sides. Rahna is outnumbered at least 3 - 1. We cut back to Sigurd and Mahnya who are heading back to Sailane celebrating the fact that they’ve won a major battle. When the Pegasus Knight carrying the Holsety catches up to them she breaks the news that it was all just a distraction and that Daccar’s true aim was Silesia. Our heroes freak out as they try to rush into the thick of combat. The Pegasus Knight hands Levin the Holsety tome along with Rahna’s letter. Levin opens the letter where Rahna explains her dire situation and that if Levin wants to prove himself as king he needs to not run away from danger, but confront it and defeat those who would threaten the safety and freedom of Silesia.

Levin takes the Holsety tome with a determined resolution to kick butt and take names but things take a turn for the worse when our heroes arrive when the siege of Silesia Castle breaks and Rahna is kept hostage. Mahnya and Sigurd devise a strategy to retake the castle. Mahnya and her Pegasus Knight army will approach them from the north while Sigurd’s army will approach them from the west. Sigurd’s army can fight them from a narrow pass which will force Daccar’s army to fight them in single file numbers, making it easier for Sigurd’s troops to dispatch them.

The armies engage in battle. Mahnya’s Pegasus Knight army faces off against Pamela’s troops. Sigurd’s forces deal with both Donovan and Lamia. The battle is a stalemate as neither side can gain any ground over the other. As Sigurd’s army pitches camp on the other side we see the anxiety and tension rising in many of the members of the cast. We get some more conversations between our potential lovebirds (Fury x Levin, Azel x Tiltyu, Dew x Briggid & Sylvia x Claude). Meanwhile Andre and his elite bow knights show up. He talks to Daccar about the fact that he was supposed to hunt down Sigurd’s dad but since Daccar promised a hefty sum of gold Andre couldn’t refuse.

Daccar, Andre and Pamela devise a plan. The next morning the armies clash again. Mahnya’s troops get the upper hand on Pamela’s and Pamela retreats. Mahnya, thinking that they’ve finally broken Pamela’s ranks, eagerly pursues her retreating foes. Unfortunately for her it’s a trap. Andre’s forces, who were previously hidden, shoot down Mahnya’s Pegasus Knights. Andre kills Mahnya, which traumatizes Fury. Fury is the only Pegasus Knight who survives the attack as Mahnya’s troops are mowed down. Sigurd’s forces are demoralized when they see Mahnya and her troops fall. Levin starts crying too. Donovan and Lamia drive Sigurd’s forces back and the episode ends on a bleak note.

During the battle Andre saw his older sister Aideen. He decides to prove himself to his Grandbell superiors by killing his sister and bringing them her head. He sneaks into Sigurd’s camp and finds Aideen. Andre shoots an arrow at Aideen and hits her, but she’s not dead. Mideel rushes to defend her and while the two have a tussle Andre manages to shoot down Mideel. It’s ultimately Briggid who saves the day as she hits him with an arrow from the Ichival.  Andre is shocked to find out that he has another sister and that she can wield the bow of Ulir. Briggid tries to kill Andre but he slinkers back like a dog with his tail between his legs after his wound from her arrow starts bleeding profusely.

On the other side of camp Fury and Levin are mourning Mahnya’s death. Fury makes Levin promise her that he’ll make this right and become king of Silesia. Levin says that he’ll only agree to the promise on one condition: That she become his queen. Fury says yes and that’s when the two know that they love each other. Azel and Tiltyu see this play out and that makes them look at each with googly eyes.

The next day Sigurd’s forces wake up still demoralized from the events of the previous day. Sigurd tries to come up with a speech to rally his troops and it doesn’t seem to have any effect on them. Levin then decides to give a speech and somehow it helps rejuvenate their crushed spirits. Sigurd, Oifey and Levin then devise a plan to beat Daccar’s forces. Before the battle begins we see Andre tell Daccar that he must depart for Grandbell. Andre finished the job he was hired to do and now he’s severely wounded. Daccar reluctantly gives him the money and Andre’s forces leave. Daccar decides to press the attack and finish off Sigurd’s troops.

Sigurd’s army puts their plan into action. They shoot down Pamela’s forces and Fury manages to stab the daylights out of Pamela. Sigurd kills Donovan, Ayra kills Lamia and Levin gets to face off against his uncle. The two duel each other, but Levin has the Holsety so he’s kicking butt. Levin dominates the fight so hard that Daccar runs away and attempts to use Rahna as a meatshield. “Either give up and hand me the throne or she dies”. Levin’s not falling for that one and he still manages to kill off Daccar. With that he’s able to reunite with his mother and the civil war is now at an end.

The day has been won for now and our heroes rejoice, but their victory has come with a price. Mahnya’s dead and Silesia is in ruins but at least our heroes are alive. However, their status as traitors to Grandbell still remains and now that Silesia is ruined they’re at the mercy of the Grandbell army. Meanwhile Byron is just on the outskirts of Lubeck Castle. He is close to Sigurd.
